Members of the Faculty and Staff:
We are writing with further background information in advance of the upcoming flu clinics for faculty and staff on all three campuses, sponsored by Human Resources. These clinics will provide vaccination against the seasonal flu. This particular form of flu is not currently circulating, and typically is not seen until January or February.
We expect demand for the seasonal flu vaccine to be high this year and will do our best to meet your interest. We already have on hand more seasonal flu vaccine than we distributed to faculty and staff last year, and we have substantially more on order. As press reports have noted, however, additional vaccine deliveries are currently delayed nationwide as manufacturers gear up to produce the new H1N1 vaccine at the same time. Public health officials assure us that ample additional supplies of the seasonal flu vaccine should be available before the virus is widespread.
Faculty and staff flu clinics will take place as follows:
Boston: Tuesday, September 29, 2009, 10:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m., Posner Hall Lounge
Grafton: Friday, October 2, 2009, 10:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m., Kohnstamm Conference Room/Jean Mayer Administration Building
Medford/Somerville: Wednesday, September 23, 2009, 10:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m., Alumnae Lounge
We will also be scheduling special flu clinics to ensure that we comply with recently released state public health regulations regarding immunization for employees at licensed clinics. The university will be in touch with those of you at the School of Dental Medicine and other university employees working in clinics who are subject to this requirement about plans for the special clinics.
If we are not able to meet demand for vaccinations at the upcoming clinics, we plan to schedule additional ones once we have received additional supplies. Vaccinations for the seasonal flu can also be obtained from a variety of other sources. Among these are your customary medical care provider; flu clinics sponsored by local public health authorities; and many pharmacies and other businesses. Information on clinics sponsored by Massachusetts public health authorities is available at http://flu.masspro.org/clinic/.
The new vaccine to protect against H1N1 influenza is not yet available. The university is monitoring the evolving plans for its distribution. Once it is available we will work to facilitate H1N1 immunization at Tufts in accordance with the guidelines being developed by public health authorities.
More information on flu preparedness at Tufts is available at http://emergency.tufts.edu/flu. Thank you for your collaboration as we work together to keep the Tufts community healthy.
Sincerely,
Kathe Cronin, Vice President for Human Resources, and
Margaret Higham, M.D., Medical Director, Tufts University Health Services
