In 1892, forty years after Tufts was founded, the Board of Trustees voted "that the College be opened to women in the undergraduate departments on the same terms and conditions as men." Tufts' then-president Elmer Capen said, "For 10 years I have felt this must come. The whole growth of the College has been toward a broader field."
