Horatio Bisbee (1839-1916), former Attorney General of the State of Florida, was the first Tufts student to voluntarily enlist in the Union Army during the Civil War. Bisbee left Tufts in 1861 to enlist as a private in the Fifth Massachusetts Regiment. After his service he returned to the college and graduated in 1863.
